Lesson 1: This May Hurt A Bit!
Have you got to that point yet where you feel like specialists are saying that your persistent pain is all in your head? Like you’re making it up for the attention or something!
Well, I hope the lessons that follow will put your mind at ease and help you understand just where pain is coming from.
By the end of this mini course my goal is to help you come to a place where you’re ready to take action on your pain, by learning how it all works.
So if you’re ready to learn, let’s start at the beginning with some hard truths, shall we…
Pain Is All In Your Head I’m Afraid.
Okay, stay with me –– All is not quite as it may first appear.
The truth is, ALL pain is an illusion that the brain creates for you (thanks brain!)
Try this: Take your fingernails and scratch them firmly along the underside of your bare forearm from your wrist to your elbow. You’re hopefully felt that scratch sensation. And I assume you also felt it on the underside of your forearm from your wrist to your elbow?
Everything makes sense. You feel the painful stimuli exactly where you expect to. Therefore it feels like the forearm sent pain signals to your brain.
The thing is, it didn’t. It was actually the brain that sent the pain to your forearm!
You Say What Now?
What actually happened was that the nerve ending in your forearm sent a signal to your brain to say something sharp is potentially going to damage the skin and expose the area to infection.
There was no pain encoded in this signal at all –– in the same way that light is not actually in the cables that run to a bulb.
The brain received that message and did something to bring that message to your conscious awareness by projecting a sensation onto the forearm.
In pain science experiment they can actually use virtual reality goggles to mess with your perception of where your arm really is, and the brain will project the pain to that place –– which in these studies was actually outside of the body. So people were being caused pain on their arm, yet were pointing to a place in mid air, where they thought their arm was!
So 100% of the time, pain is an illusion that is all in the head.
But wait a minute. My pain is definitely real!!!
Well that leads us into lesson 2…
